Artist Statement
Out of kilter and misplaced people have been prominent features of my work since 2006. These ideas have developed further; incorporating unusual situations in extraordinary landscapes. With the use of borrowed imagery from old masterpieces and contemporary images from music videos and fashion photography, I explore combinations of landscapes and figures until a scene communicates something challenging about what we accept as a social norm.
The direction of this body of work has been influenced by the resurgence of comic book themed films and the popular romantic idea that someone will save the day, someone human, and someone just like you or me. For inspiration I have looked to the extraordinary scenes of Michelangelo and Giotto frescos with their immense narrative power. Furthermore, the atmosphere of the tales of the Brothers Grimm permeates my work, infusing it with a subtle absurdity and surrealism.
